Giro d’Italia. Vincenzo Nibali takes a strong fourth place in Turin – Astana

Giro d’Italia. Vincenzo Nibali takes a strong fourth place in Turin

A super tough Stage 14 around Turin with Superga and Colle della Maddalena climbs passed twice has been held today at the Giro d’Italia. The Astana Qazaqstan Team leader Vincenzo Nibali showed great legs today, finishing fourth in a small group of GC contenders just behind the solo winner Simon Yates.

“The day has turned out to be a tough one, because the pace proposed by Bora was a very high one. Also, it was a very hot day, and it was quite challenging to eat and drink on a nervous and tricky circuit in Turin. The pace of the race was very high both on the climbs and on the descents, so it was really tough”, – said Vincenzo Nibali.

The day started with numerous attacks from the peloton with Harold Tejada, Joe Dombrowski, Fabio Felline and Vadim Pronskiy trying to break away. Finally, it was Dombrowski, who attacked solo on Il Pilonetto climb, later creating a group, who opened a three-minute gap to the peloton.

However, on the first climb Superga a reduced group of GC contenders, including Astana’s Vincenzo Nibali caught the break back.

Nibali was the rider, who launched an attack on the second climb Superga, creating a group of four leaders. Later, after several attacks these four riders broke away clear to get an advantage to the rivals and to play the stage: Simon Yates won it after an attack with a few kilometers to go, while Jai Hindley, Richard Carapaz and Vincenzo Nibali finished 15 seconds later.

“Yes, I am quite satisfied with the stage. I’d like to fight for a stage win, but I knew it would be difficult. I lost some time on Etna, but I was still there, and I knew, that the rivals consider me as a dangerous rider for the GC, while to win from a small group of favorites is always hard”, – added Vincenzo Nibali.

Carapaz moved into the race lead, taking the pink jersey, while Nibali became 8th in the General Classification, 2 minutes, 58 seconds behind Carapaz.

Giro d’Italia. Vincenzo Nibali takes eighth place atop Blockhaus – Astana

Giro d’Italia. Vincenzo Nibali takes eighth place atop Blockhaus

A very hard mountain stage to Blockhaus has been held today at the Giro d’Italia: the riders passed 191 km with 5 categorized climbs, including the final ascent to a super tough Blockhaus.

Astana Qazaqstan Team spent a very active day: Joe Dombrowski was able to join the daily breakaway and became the last rider to be caught by the main group on the lowest slopes of Blockhaus, while team leader Vincenzo Nibali showed good legs, staying inside the GC contenders’ group almost until the finish and taking a solid eighth place.

“Well, I tried to do this climb in a regular rhythm, because my plan was to defend and not to attack. Today, together with the team we decided to try to keep strong during the day and to see, where I can reach at the end of the stage. Actually, the legs worked pretty well, and I felt maybe better than I was hoping for. It was a very hot day, maybe the first really hot day of this Giro, so many riders were suffering because of it. Also, the stage turned out to be a real challenge with D+ over 5000 meters, looks like many years passed since the Giro had a stage of 5000 meters of elevation. However, I think, it was a good stage for us, and now I am happy that we are heading into the rest day, which will bring us a possibility to recover a bit”, – said Vincenzo Nibali.

After Stage 9, won by Jai Hindley, Vincenzo Nibali moved up to 13th position, 3 minutes and 4 seconds behind the pink jersey Juan Pedro Lopez.

Giro di Sicilia. Vincenzo Nibali takes second on Stage 2 – Astana

Giro di Sicilia. Vincenzo Nibali takes second on Stage 2

In a fast uphill finish in Caltanissetta, which crowned Stage 2 of the Giro di Sicilia, the leader of Astana Qazaqstan Team Vincenzo Nibali took a strong second place right behind the winner Damiano Caruso.

“I am quite happy with the way the stage was going on and, in general, with my result even if it is just a second place and not a victory. It was clear that Damiano was the favorite today as he is fast in this kind of short uphill. I feel like my form is coming after a big break and an altitude training camp, so it looks pretty good. I want to congratulate Damiano Caruso on this victory, it is good that another Sicilian rider won today. We are good friends, and I am happy for him. Well, it was a nice day spent with my team in a good way and I am looking forward to the next days here at the Giro di Sicilia”, – said Vincenzo Nibali.

Astana Qazaqstan Team riders worked well all together during the whole stage, keeping Vincenzo Nibali in front and protecting him from any trouble. In the end of the day thanks to teammates Vincenzo was able to get a good position in front of the group on the last uphill. Staying on the wheel of Damiano Caruso, Nibali was trying to sprint for a victory, but missed just a little and finished second.

“I think we can be happy with the way our team spent this day and with the result of Vincenzo Nibali. We knew that Caruso was the favorite for this kind of finish, and I am happy that Vincenzo was able to stay close to him, taking a really good second place. After a training camp on altitude, he still needs some days for acclimatization, but today’s stage showed that he is on the right way. We still have two days in this race with the queen stage to Etna on Friday. Let’s see what is going to happen there”, – said Giuseppe Martinelli.

Unfortunately, two riders of Astana Qazaqstan Team Alexandre Vinokurov and Juan Carlos Lopez were involved in a crash, but both riders escaped with some minor injuries.

After Stage 2 of the race Vincenzo Nibali is sitting on the second place in the General Classification, just 4 seconds down to Damiano Caruso.

Valerio Conti and Antonio Nibali set to join Astana Qazaqstan Team for two years – Astana

Valerio Conti and Antonio Nibali set to join Astana Qazaqstan Team for two years

Astana Qazaqstan Team will welcome two more Italian riders in the upcoming season with Valerio Conti and Antonio Nibali both signing a two-year agreement with the Kazakh WorldTour team (for 2022 and 2023).

Valerio Conti (28) turned pro in 2014 and during his eight seasons at the WorldTour level has scored some important results, showing himself as a strong climber and one-day racer. He won Gran Premio Bruno Beghelli in his first year as a pro, won a stage of the Tour of Japan in the following year, took a beautiful solo victory at a stage of La Vuelta in 2016, scored a solid second place in the General Classification of the Presidential Cycling Tour of Turkey in 2019 and took a win at Trofeo Matteotti in 2020. Back in 2019 Conti spent five days in the Pink Jersey as the race leader of the Giro d’Italia.

Two second places at Giro dell’Appennino and Gran Premio Citta di Lugano are his best results in the 2021 cycling season.

“I am happy to move to Astana Qazaqstan Team in the new season. It is a great team, and I am really looking forward to joining and to face the new challenges in the career. Astana is a strong and well-balanced international team, but of course, I am happy to see many Italian riders in the roster as it will be much easier for me to blend in quickly. The main goals for the next season are still to be discussed, but my personal wish is to try to win as much as possible”, – said Valerio Conti.

Antonio Nibali (29) is known as a strong helper for team leaders both at the Grand Tours and week-long stage races. At the same time, Antonio is very active in breakaways, always looking for a chance to fight for a stage win. In 2018, he won a stage at the Tour of Austria and took a good 8th place at Gran Premio Citta di Lugano, while this season he was 6th at a stage of the Tour of the Alps and finished 12th in the General Classification of the Tour of Sicily.

“I am looking forward to meet the team and to start the new season. I hope to spend some good years in Astana Qazaqstan Team, to help achieve the biggest goals of the team, to try to win something and to help the leaders in the best possible way. I am quite sure I will find a nice atmosphere in the team as I know a good part of the staff and, of course, some riders. The last two seasons were not that great due to the COVID-19 situation but I hope in the following year, step by step, everything will come back to 100% normal. I am ready for a new challenge in my career, it is an important change for me, and I hope to provide my new team with all the best I can do”, – said Antonio Nibali.

“Two strong riders are coming to our team. Both Valerio and Antonio are very experienced riders with many Grand Tour participations to their names, so they will bring some additional strength to our Grand Tour group. At the same time, these riders have good potential when it comes to winning races. Valerio Conti showed it many times in one-day races, while Antonio Nibali is known as a breakaway rider, so I am sure that they will get their chance to fight for a nice personal result”, – said Alexandr Vinokurov, General Manager of Astana Qazaqstan Team.

Vincenzo Nibali returns to Team Astana – Astana

Vincenzo Nibali returns to Team Astana

Vincenzo Nibali will return to Astana, the team he rode for from 2013 to 2016 and where he achieved most of his career highlights, including two triumphs at the Giro d’Italia (in 2013 and 2016) and the Tour de France (in 2014).

The 36-year-old Italian rider is set to reunite with Team Astana in 2022 in what will be a homecoming for the decorated Grand Tour winner.

“I am very happy to come back to Team Astana, because for me it is a real family that has given me a lot and together with which I have achieved my greatest successes. I know most of the management and staff of the team, so I will return to the team I know really well. Also I have some very nice memories from visiting Kazakhstan and its capital and it was an unforgettable experience”, – said Vincenzo Nibali.

“It is difficult to talk right now about any specific expectations for my return to the team, as well as about the plans for next season. But first of all, for me it will be an enjoyable reunion with the team, and I would like to enjoy the new season to the fullest. Of course, I would like to prove myself, to achieve certain results, but at the same time I am interested in providing my experience to young riders. In any case, together with the team management we will still discuss various aspects of the new season, we will determine the goals, both team and my personal ones, and after that we will start moving in the chosen direction”, – added Nibali.

Nibali spent four seasons in Team Astana and accumulated 22 wins, including his three Grand Tour titles, as well as victories at Il Lombardia, the Italian National Championships, Tirreno-Adriatico, Giro del Trentino and Tour of Oman. In the blue colours of the Kazakh team, Nibali won an impressive nine Grand Tour stages.

“We are happy that this return is coming true. Vincenzo Nibali doesn’t need any introduction – he is a true champion and leader. Probably, he spent the best years of his career in our team, and I think it is symbolic that he will finish such a great cycling career in Team Astana. For us, the arrival of Nibali is an opportunity to get and to use all the rich experience a rider of his calibre can offer, to transform and improve the team, which will undergo some great changes in the new season. We would like to pay more attention to young riders and the presence of a champion like Nibali could play a very important role in their growth and development. However, I believe that Vincenzo has not said yet his last word in cycling, so in some races we can still rely on him as the leader of the team to achieve new successes together again”, – said Alexandr Vinokurov, General Manager of Team Astana in 2022.
