Miguel Angel Lopez quits Giro d’Italia on Stage 4 due to injury – Astana

Miguel Angel Lopez quits Giro d’Italia on Stage 4 due to injury

The leader of Astana Qazaqstan Team Miguel Angel Lopez was forced to abandon the race in the first kilometers of Stage 4 to Etna due to left thigh injury.

“Well, Miguel Angel has some thigh problems for a few days already. We tried to do our best to solve it during the first stages in Budapest and during the rest day, but it did not work. Today, unfortunately, he had to stop. Our first diagnosis is the tendon inflammation to the left quadriceps due probable overload or old injury. But, in the next days the rider will pass deep medical check up to find the exact cause of the injury to start the appropriate treatment”, – said Emilio Magni, team doctor.

“It is really sad to finish the Giro in this way after just four days due to an injury. The team staff did all possible to help me to recover during these days, but it was impossible in racing conditions. I was hoping day by day that it becomes better and I could pass it, but today I just could not push the pedals normally due to the pain in my thigh. I am really sorry to leave the race and my teammates, who came here to help me to fight for the General Classification, but that’s cycling. I wish all the guys good luck and I hope the team will do a strong race!” – said Miguel Angel Lopez.

Tour of the Alps. Miguel Angel Lopez wins atop Grossglockner – Astana

Tour of the Alps. Miguel Angel Lopez wins atop Grossglockner

The leader of Astana Qazaqstan Team Miguel Angel Lopez takes a beautiful solo win atop Kals am Grossglockner at Stage 4 of the Tour of the Alps. Lopez attacked from the peloton with some four kilometers to go; firstly, he caught the only remained rider from the earlier breakaway Thibault Pinot and later after a counterattack he went solo to take his first win of the season.

“It is a good day for me, but also for the whole team. We were looking for this success and now we get the confidence and motivation for the next goals. It was the only stage with an uphill final and, definitely, I was motivated to try something today. I stayed calmly in the main group while we had Sebastian and Fabio in the break, but when it became clear that it won’t reach the finish, I decided to attack. I made a powerful move, shortly getting a gap to the peloton. But until a moment I still was not sure if I can reach Thibault Pinot or not. He still was far away in front, but with some 2.5 kilometers to go I finally saw him in front, and in that moment I just gave my best to catch him and later to attack again”, – said Miguel Angel Lopez.

“I lived some good moments at the finish, and I wanted to deliver this success to Astana Qazaqstan Team, my home team where I returned this season and where I got a very warm welcome back. Also, I wanted to dedicate the win to my second child, who we are expecting with my wife soon. Alongside this by this victory I just wanted to remember our great champion Michele Scarponi who left us five years ago”, – continued Miguel Angel.

“Well, we arrived here with a goal to make the final step in our preparation to the Giro d’Italia, to feel the racing rhythm, to try different tactics and to try to win a stage. I believe we are spending a good week here at the Tour of the Alps, I feel like my form is growing and I am on the right way to the Giro”, – concluded Lopez.

Astana Qazaqstan Team was very active from the start: firstly, it was David De La Cruz who attacked for several times for a breakaway, and in a moment he found himself in a group of eleven riders. When this group has been caught back, Fabio Felline and Sebastian Henao made another move, which brought them to another group of escapers.

After a crash Fabio Felline came back to the peloton, where he provided some help to Miguel Angel Lopez, while Sebastian Henao still was fighting for a stage win until the final six kilometers, when the peloton neutralized his breakaway.

There was still a rider in front of the race – Thibault Pinot, but he could not resist under a super strong attack of Miguel Angel Lopez, who won today’s Stage 4.

“We had two options for this stage and at the meeting before start we decided that it is better if Miguel Angel stays in the peloton for the final, while some other riders would try to do something in the break. I think our team did a great stage with David De La Cruz and later with Fabio Felline and Sebastian Henao, who worked hard and fought for a stage win. Well, at the end of the day it did not work, but we still had our leader Miguel Angel Lopez, who was ready to attack on the final climb. It was a perfect move; he was unstoppable today. We all are really happy with this long-awaited victory, and it brings us some good motivation and inspiration ahead of the Giro d’Italia”, – said Alexandr Shefer, Sports Director of Astana Qazaqstan Team.

Gran Premio Miguel Indurain (April 2) / Itzulia Basque Country (April 4-9)

Paul Lapeira : « Difficult races »

« I am very satisfied with my start to the season (especially 2nd in the sixth stage of the UAE Tour and 4th in the Classic Loire-Atlantique). In addition to seeing myself progress, things are going very well in the team, I have been well integrated. I have never raced in Spain, but I know they are tough races with a lot of strong competition. In any case, you have to go through it so you can continue to progress. We will bring a competitive team including Aurélien Paret-Peintre and Clément Champoussin. After having had my chance in the last rounds of the Coupe de France, I will enjoy returning to playing a team role. This will be beneficial to me for future rounds of the Coupe de France and in particular Paris-Camembert, which will take place soon and is close to my heart since I’m Norman.»Paul

Miguel Angel Lopez is third in the General Classification of Vuelta a Andalucia – Astana

Miguel Angel Lopez is third in the General Classification of Vuelta a Andalucia

There was all-in at the final stage for the riders of Astana Qazaqstan Team, who tried to bring their leader Miguel Angel Lopez to a victory in the General Classification. The team did all possible and also Miguel Angel made a strong attack inside the final two kilometers to go. But it was not enough – the group of the contenders arrived at the final 500 meters all together, while in the uphill sprint yesterday’s winner Wout Poels was able to protect his lead and the overall victory, while Miguel Angel Lopez became third in the General Classification of the Vuelta a Andalucia 2022.

“Well, we tried our best and the guys did all they could during the stage and also in the final. Yevgeniy Fedorov made an excellent job today, pulling hardly in the peloton, while Harold Tejada and Alexey Lutsenko supported me at the climb before I launched my attack. Indeed, the climb turned out to be very fast and not as hard as we expected. At the end of the day I took a third place in the General Classification”, – said Miguel Angel Lopez.

“We had quite a young team here and maybe we missed something to get a better result, but in general I can be satisfied with the form I could build to the start of the season and with the way I spent this week. I am looking forward to a small rest before my next and more important races”, – added Miguel Angel Lopez.

The final stage finished with a victory of a rider from the late breakaway: Lennard Kamna won after a solo attack on the last climb, while Astana’s Simone Velasco finished eighth.

In the General Classification Wout Poels became the overall winner with Cristian Rodriguez and Miguel Angel Lopez completing the race podium with second and third positions. Alexey Lutsenko finished ninth, while Harold Tejada did 12th.

Vuelta a Andalucia. Miguel Angel Lopez is second in Alcalá la Real – Astana

Vuelta a Andalucia. Miguel Angel Lopez is second in Alcalá la Real

Miguel Angel Lopez launched a powerful counterattack inside the final kilometer of Stage 2 atop the castle hill in Alcalá la Real. He tried his best to catch the solo leader Alessandro Covi, but finished second, just three seconds behind Covi.

“Well, it was a good try, and I am happy with the legs I had today. Indeed, my feeling was good, and I was motivated to try something in the end. I started my counterattack a bit from behind, but in a moment I almost caught the wheel of Covi. However, he stayed strong in front, and I finished second. I believe, I also paid a bit in the end because I lost a lot of energy chasing the peloton after my crash. Fortunately, I did not get any serious injury in that crash, but it was not easy to make my come back to the group. However, it was a good day for us, and I am looking forward to the next stages”, – explained Miguel Angel Lopez.

“It was our plan to try something in the final part, but we had to change our plans after that crash with some 50 kilometers to go. Miguel Angel lost some time for a bike change after his crash and afterwards it took time for him to get the group back. So in the final we did all we could and I believe Lopez still looked strong at the finish. We see how his form is progressing and we are still there for the fight for the General Classification”, – added Giuseppe Martinelli, Sports Director of Astana Qazaqstan Team.

After two stages Miguel Angel Lopez is third in the overall standings, just 8 seconds behind the new race leader Alessandro Covi. Harold Tejada, who finished 13th today, is 14th overall, 16 seconds behind the leader.

Miguel Angel Lopez is set to return to Astana Qazaqstan Team for two seasons – Astana

Miguel Angel Lopez is set to return to Astana Qazaqstan Team for two seasons

The long-term leader of the Kazakh team Miguel Angel Lopez makes his return to Astana Qazaqstan Team. The 27-year-old Colombian rider has signed a new two-year agreement with the team for 2022 and 2023.

“Coming back to the Astana team is a return home. In the world of professional cycling, a rider who wants to keep on moving forward sometimes has to change something in his career, to gain new experience. Sometimes it is a good one, sometimes not. The main thing is that I am coming home to my team, the team that gave me so much and with which, I am sure, we will be able to live many more wonderful moments. There is a lot of work ahead for the new season to be successful for me and for Astana Qazaqstan Team”, – said Miguel Angel Lopez.

Miguel Angel Lopez spent six seasons in the Astana project from 2015 to 2020, where he achieved most of his biggest results, including GC victories at Tour de Suisse (2016), Volta a Catalunya (2019), Tour of Colombia (2019), stage triumphs at the Tour de France and Vuelta a España as well as at the oldest classic race Milano-Torino. Together with Team Astana, Lopez reached the final podium of two Grand Tours in 2018, securing third place at both the Giro d’Italia and Vuelta a España.

The Colombian rider moved on for the 2021 season, during which time he also tasted some important successes with victory at the Vuelta a Andalucia, the one-day race Mont Ventoux Challenge, and the queen stage of La Vuelta.

“Miguel Angel Lopez is a rider who grew up and achieved his greatest successes in our team, and therefore I am happy that after a short break he is making his return to Astana Team. Over the past year, Miguel Angel has gained serious experience, which, perhaps, he lacked in our team. I think that this experience, both good and not so good, will help him to continue his development. Lopez proved that he is still one of the strongest riders in the world, continuing to win at the highest level, so it is great that Miguel Angel will continue his career in Astana Qazaqstan Team”, – said Alexandr Vinokurov, General Manager of Astana Qazaqstan Team.
