Seven Magical Moments of 2021 – Part 7

Throughout this week, we look back and celebrate seven magical moments for Israel Start-Up Nation in 2021, presented by Vini Fantini.

The seventh and final Magical ISN Moment we have picked from this season is naturally the iconic scenes from the muddy Paris-Roubaix.

Fighting against the rivals, the pavés and the challenging conditions, the ISN riders put on an extraordinary performance with Guillaume Boivin and Tom Van Asbroeck at the very front of the race.

Ultimately, both riders made Top-10 as Van Asbroeck finished in eighth place with Boivin in ninth.

Tom Van Asbroeck: “During the race, there was just one thing on my mind: Stay focused, don’t make a mistake and stay on the bike!” I was so focused on the road and my surroundings that it didn’t leave a lot of time for other emotions. The only other thing I felt was fear before hitting the first pavé-sector. However, halfway through this sector it became enjoyable because I actually had a lot of fun out there.”

Guillaume Boivin: Looking at the photos now, I would just love to be back there again. It was pretty scary beforehand, but during the race, it was so much fun. We were in the game, me and Tom, and I thought we might have a chance to win this bike race. From the second photo [below], I just remember being cracked. My wrist was hurting and I just wanted to go home. It was pretty devastating at the finish but I would do it all over again tomorrow if I could. Next year’s Paris-Roubaix can’t come quick enough!”

Itamar Einhorn sprint win victory Slovakia Slovaquie ISN

Throughout this week, we are looking back and celebrating seven magical moments for Israel Start-Up Nation in 2021, presented by Vini Fantini.

The sixth Magical ISN Moment of the year is another historic one for the team, as Itamar Einhorn stormed to victory on the final stage of Tour de Slovaquie ahead of Peter Sagan. This was Einhorn’s first professional win on the big scene and also the first Israeli victory in a field of this caliber. To make it more special, this victory came just one day ahead Einhorn’s 24th birthday.

After only starting his season in the middle of May this year, Einhorn scored no less than 10 Top-10s in the bunch sprints throughout the year, establishing himself as a force to be reckoned with for the years to come!

Itamar Einhorn: ”When I think back to this day, it’s mostly about how I felt that I had been so close to winning many of my previous sprints. I had had a lot of Top-10s and I knew I could make all the pieces of the puzzle come together one day. After I came back from my injury, I felt stronger and stronger, especially after the Vuelta when I felt I had super legs.

“I am really happy to be part of Israeli cycling history, being the first rider to deliver a pro win in such a high-level field. In this race, all my teammates really wanted me to win, so I’m happy I could finish off their hard work.”

Seven Magical Moments of 2021 – Part 5

Throughout this week, we will look back and celebrate seven magical moments for Israel Start-Up Nation in 2021, presented by Vini Fantini.

Today’s magical ISN moment is Ben Hermans’ solo victory in Giro dell’Appennino back in June.

Having already marked this race beforehand, Hermans was very eager to get in the mix and fight for the win. His Israel Start-Up Nation teammates did a great job to control the race before setting him up to attack at the end.

The 35-year-old Belgian launched his decisive move on the final climb of the day, dropping everybody else. From the top, 25 km remained, leaving Hermans and his Factor OSTRO bike alone against the rest. Despite a furious chase behind, Hermans managed to hold on to take the win, lifting up his bike in celebration as his crossed the line.

Ben Hermans:At that time of the year, we had just made some decisions about my program for the rest of the season. Together with the team management, we chose a nice program for me with races where I would have my own chance in every race I started, instead of doing the Tour the France where my chances of success would be smaller.

“When we started Giro dell’Appennino, we made a plan on how to win the race. Every single teammate had his own specific role in order to achieve that goal. It was fantastic to see that the race happened just like we planned. We took control of the race and I had the legs to go solo over the last climb.

“It wasn’t easy to finish off the job with a 25 km solo ride so I was really relieved when I succeeded! Starting off this block of racing with a win also gave me a lot of confidence and took away some pressure. I lifted my bike in the air as I crossed the line because on the final 25 km, the only thing I was thinking about was how fast the Factor OSTRO bike was on the downhill and on the flat roads towards the finish. It was truly a crucial aspect of the victory.”

Seven Magical Moments of 2021 – Part 4

Greipel victory stage 4 Vuelta a Andalucia ISN

Throughout this week, we will look back and celebrate seven magical moments for Israel Start-Up Nation in 2021, presented by Vini Fantini.

The fourth moment we have chosen is André Greipel’s sprint victory on stage 4 of Vuelta a Andalucia. After coming close to winning in Tour of Turkey the previous month, this was Greipel’s second win in just five days after he won Trofeo Alcudia-Port d’Alcudia.

What made this sprint victory in Vuelta a Andalucia special was the impeccable teamwork throughout the day. Knowing this was the last chance for a bunch sprint, ISN committed fully to make sure Greipel would be in the best possible position to win. On the final kilometer, Daryl Impey and Rick Zabel took the front and with 150 meters to go, Greipel launched his sprint with nobody being able to follow his powerful acceleration.

André Greipel: “I was pretty relieved to get this victory as there were some very good sprinters in the race. We did a really good sprint and the teamwork was just fantastic that day, even with a messy corner with around 250-300 meters to go. In general, we had such a good group of riders in the race and of course I was proud to take another victory.”

Seven Magical Moments of 2021 – Part 3

Throughout this week, we are looking back and celebrating seven magical moments for Israel Start-Up Nation in 2021, presented by Vini Fantini.

Like yesterday, today’s chosen moment is also from the Giro d’Italia this year. The day in question is May 26 when Dan Martin took a beautiful victory on stage 17. With the win, Martin also entered the exclusive club of stage winners in all three Grand Tours.

While the stage win itself was spectacular, the truly captivating aspect was the nail-biting fight between the now 35-year-old Irishman and the GC contenders, as Martin fought to stay away on the steep slopes of Sega di Ala.

In what might be perceived as an unjust fight against the top favorites, Martin had one crucial advantage on his side as he had already done recon of the climb a month earlier. He knew exactly what was awaiting him and how he should manage his efforts. Despite starting the grueling 10 km climb with just around two minutes on the peloton, Martin kept the GC riders behind him to cross the line first with his arms in the air.

Dan Martin: “Looking back, this is one of my most important victories but also a hugely proud moment of what we achieved that day. We knew it was one of the last opportunities to win a stage so we made a plan and it came off despite the gaps never being too big. I don’t think anybody believed that I could hold on but I just kept believing it was possible and rode tactically, monitoring the gap behind.

“When I did recon of the climb, I had a special feeling and I knew that it could be a special climb for me. Climbing solo on the steepest section with hundreds of screaming fans, for the first time since the pandemic, and then holding off to the finish and being able to really enjoy the moment. It was very different to my stage win in the Vuelta a España last year, when I didn’t even know that I had won! I will treasure this one.”

Seven Magical Moments of 2021 – Part 2

Throughout this week, we will look back and celebrate seven magical moments for Israel Start-Up Nation in 2021, presented by Vini Fantini.

The second moment we have chosen is from May, when Alessandro De Marchi took the pink leader’s jersey at the Giro d’Italia after finishing second on stage 4. A historic moment for ISN, getting the team’s first ever leader’s jersey in a Grand Tour.

The night before the stage, De Marchi had already talked with his Italian sports director, Claudio Cozzi, about the chances of taking the jersey the next day. Therefore, it was no surprise to see De Marchi, a true breakaway specialist, make it into the right move at the start of the day.

On the final ascent towards the finish in Sestola, De Marchi made sure to stay near the leaders fighting for both the stage win and the pink jersey. Ultimately, the 35-year-old Italian had to settle for second place but he still managed to secure the biggest achievement of his career so far, which left him in tears as he crossed the line.

Alessandro De Marchi: “Getting to wear the Maglia Rosa has been absolutely amazing for me. It was not only a historical moment for Israel Start-Up Nation but also for me. With the type of rider I am, and being Italian, surely this has been the biggest moment of my career. It’s also something that has changed me a lot in regards to being more confident. I got so many happy messages from the cycling world after taking the jersey and that’s something that goes way beyond the result itself. I couldn’t have done it without my team and I’m really happy to have contributed to writing ISN’s history with this achievement.”

Seven Magical Moments of 2021 – Part 1

Throughout this week, we are looking back and celebrating seven magical ISN moments from the 2021 season, presented by Vini Fantini.

The first one is Mads Würtz Schmidt’s victory on stage 6 of Tirreno-Adriatico. The Dane had marked this stage beforehand and implemented an impressive fuel strategy prior and during the race with our Maurten products. He was very eager to make the early breakaway and after multiple attempts at the beginning of the day, he finally succeeded to get up the road in a small group.

Against the odds, the breakaway managed to keep the peloton at bay, leaving the escapees to fight for the win. Feeling comfortable with the situation and very confident with his own shape, Würtz Schmidt told his sports director, Cherie Pridham, already with seven kilometers to go, that he would win this stage in a sprint. And he was right.

Celebrating with his arms in the air and a big roar, Würtz Schmidt outsprinted his breakaway companions to take his first win in several years.

Mads Würtz Schmidt: “When I think back to this day, it’s mostly about how I rode that final and how confident I was that I would win. To do that last lap in Lido di Fermo, knowing that we would ride for the victory, while being fully aware of what I should do to win, that was amazing. And when we got out of that last corner, I already knew that I would win. That’s what really stands out to me, looking back at that stage. I could feel that my winner instinct was back and it was just awesome to ride the final, knowing that I could win.”

Tomorrow, we will present another magical ISN moment from this year. Stay tuned!
