ANDRONI GIOCATTOLI SIDERMEC: THE BALANCE FOR THE SETTIMANA CICLISTICA ITALIANA IS GOOD
The results are good for Androni Giocattoli Sidermec (Bettiniphoto) at the Settimana Ciclistica Italiana which ended yesterday after five stages.
The team, led by Giovanni Ellena and Alessandro Spezialetti, was a good protagonist of the Sardinian race, which proposed Salice Occhiali, one of the historical and most important partners of Androni Giocattoli Sidermec, among its technical sponsors. Especially the Swiss Simon Pellaud, author of several attack actions, stood out. Pellaud also wore the green leader’s jersey for the mountain grand prix for three days.
In the last stage, Jhonatan Restrepo finished second, overtaken in the sprint by the German Ackermann. Also worth noting is Santiago Umba’s second place finish in the youth rankings behind Giovanni Aleotti.
The comment of the team manager Gianni Savio also arrives on the Sardinian race: «We almost won with Jhonatan Restrepo and with the results obtained we finished third – first among the Professional teams – in the Italian team championship standings. Reaching the World Tour Bahrain and Trek will be very difficult, but we will certainly try».

Matej Mohorič took his second stage victory at this year’s Tour de France, taking Bahrain Victorious’ tally up to three.
The 19th stage started in Mourenx and, finishing in Libourne, raced over 207 kilometres. It was expected to be a day for a bunch sprint, but an early breakaway of six riders, including Mohorič, had other ideas.
The break had a gap of around four minutes. With 100 kilometres to go, a group of 14 riders managed to bridge over to the breakaway. In the last 40 kilometres, the break started to attack each other. In the final 25 kilometres, Matej managed to break clear of the rest and solo to victory in Libourne, also earning the most combative rider award.
Matej Mohoric: ” On paper, it was a day for the sprint, but I wanted to make sure I was ready to go in any move. When I heard another group was coming over, I knew that they would also be making a big effort to close us, so I remained calm. In the end, it was about following the right move, and when Pollit attacked, I countered and was able to make a gap. I was suffering in the last ten kilometres, but I just kept fighting till the finish.
I am so happy, not just for me but the team. We had a hard couple of days, but it just brought us closer together and to keep fighting. I’m super proud of this win, this team and what we’ve achieved at this race.”
From France to Italy, where the team celebrated another podium result in Sardinia at the ‘Settimana Ciclistica Italiana’, with Jonathan Milan second behind Pascal Ackermann (Bohra-Hansgrohe) in a photo finish on stage 3.
The team’s new pro rider was focused on trying to go for the win as today’s stage (Oristano-Cagliari 180.9km), according to the overall difference in altitude, was on the paper the easiest of the week, and the course almost flat, especially in the last 50km, suits him. The team worked to support him on the two KoM of the day – in Villacidro atop a steep ramp and atop Genna and Bogai Pass (8km with an average gradient around 5%) – and to close the gap to the day’s breakaway, that ended after 108km. Then it was ‘Gruppo compatto’ until the finish on a straight wide road in Cagliari, where the fast men battled for the win.
Jonathan Milan: “I’m really happy on this second place. Of course, I was looking for a win, but with a rival like Ackermann it’s never easy to beat him. Anyway, I tried and got second place only for few centimeters. Today the team was really strong and helped me come to the final km; then I just did my best”.
Alberto Volpi, Bahrain Victorious SD: “Jonathan wanted to take his responsibility for the sprint today. He talked to the team at the meeting, and we were happy with this decision. He deserves our congratulations on that. He is a young rider, and in his first year as a pro, he showed great maturity. We know it’s always a bit disappointing losing in a photo finish, especially if you were looking for the first win as a pro. But he took a result of respect, behind a strong sprinter as Ackermann. The team did an excellent job supporting him, but the guys also worked to help Santiago Buitrago, who closes in on KoM jersey. With two stages to go, it will be one of our goals”.

Israel Start-Up Nation will compete in the Settimana Ciclistica Italiana. For the first edition of the stage race on Sardinia, the team brings Ben Hermans as its GC-competitor, Rudy Barbier in the role of sprinter, and two Israeli riders: Guy Niv and Guy Sagiv.
The Italian race features five stages. It will be ‘race on’ for Hermans as GC-contender directly from the opening stage, while Barbier will be looking forward to the third and final stages.
The Belgian climber was on a roll at the end of last month when he won the Giro dell’Appennino and finished on the podium in the Gran Premio di Lugano.
“From there I was able to keep on working on my fitness,” Hermans said before the start of the Settimana Ciclistica Italiana. “There are no real uphill finishes this week on Sardinia, but the parcours seems diverse enough to make differences.”
The two Israelis in the lineup both spent a lot of time at altitude, during ISN’s training camp in Livigno. The stage race on Sardinia is their first race after the camp.
Guy Niv, the first Israeli rider to finish the Tour de France, worked on his shape during that camp. “After finishing the Giro d’Italia, I rested well, did the national championships in Israel, and then started preparing for my second part of the season. I am looking back on a successful training camp in Livigno. I find racing in Italy always fun, so I am excited to race again.”
Guy Sagiv is also looking forward to the second part of his season. Just like Niv, he competed in the Israeli national championships before starting his build-up towards mid- and late-season goals. “Livigno was good to me,” he said. “We spent a lot of time on the bike and finished a very good training block at altitude. A training camp like we had there is exactly the impulse I need to be ready for another block of racing.”
Barbier returns to racing after two months without. “It has been a long time, indeed, which makes me very keen on pinning a bib number on.” Barbier was also in Livigno. “I have enjoyed my time and I am ready to race.”

Bahrain Victorious will take part in the first edition of the “Settimana Ciclistica Italiana – Sulle strade della Sardegna”, scheduled from 14th to 18th July entirely on the roads of the Italian island and Region Sardinia.
The total 860km course consists of 5 stages, from the north to the south of the island, featuring mainly an inland hilly and mid-mountain terrain. Departing from Alghero and finishing in Cagliari, the peloton will reach other main towns like Sassari and Oristano. A final mountain day could be decisive for the General Classification, although the opening stage could also be already a key day for the overall.
Bahrain Victorious SD, Alberto Volpi: “We will keep our attention high from the beginning, as our goal is to grab a place on the GC podium with Mark Padun, and stage 1 from Alghero to Sassari can be tricky when it comes to a short stage race. Any summit finish is on the menu, but the whole course will be challenging because we are on an island, and the wind can affect the race alongside the high temperatures. Therefore, stage 2 – is likely to end in a bunch sprint – and stage 3 – the easiest on paper – could be unpredictable for the GC fight. The race will end with a demanding weekend as stage 4 features a road constantly climbing since the start and stage 5 in particular, with a tough climb of 7 km (max. 12%) to be repeated two times in 46 km.
We will aim to be competitive in the general classification, but we are also looking for a stage win. The Settimana Ciclistica Italiana will be the last test before the Olympics Games. It will be a great opportunity to tune the preparation for several riders competing here, including our Damiano Caruso, Gino Mäder and Jonathan Milan. Both Damiano and Gino will be supported to go hunting stages. To help, especially in the mountains, we will have good climbers as Santiago Buitrago and Stevie Williams, with Domen Novak protecting our leader. All in all, we have an interesting squad to lit up this new stage race on the calendar”.
