Volta ao Algarve. Samuele Battistella second atop Alto da Fóia

Astana Qazaqstan Team’s Samuele Battistella sprinted to a second place in the uphill finish of Stage 2 of the Volta ao Algarve. Some 20 riders arrived at the top after the final 7.5 kilometer climb. Hayter and Battistella started the sprint but were passed in a last move by David Gaudu, who took the stage and the leader’s jersey.

“The final 7.5-kilometer uphill were not so steep. My plan was to try to stay in the wheels and to sprint. I made a mistake and started my sprint too early, with 300 meters to go. With that head wind, that was really too early. The legs were blown up when we approached the finish line. In earlier sprints, I’ve started often too late and was then boxed in, that’s why I decided already this morning to start the sprint first. Unfortunately”, – explained Samuele Battistella.

Battistella is 12th in the General Classification now, 29 seconds behind the new yellow jersey David Gaudu.

“I have no GC ambitions any more after my 28 seconds loss due to yesterday’s crash at 12 kilometers from the finish, but the legs are good. We can still do something the coming stages”,– concluded Samuele Battistella.

Samuele Battistella is seventh at the Tour de la Provence – Astana

Samuele Battistella is seventh at the Tour de la Provence

The French stage race Tour de la Provence ended today atop 13-km-long climb Montagne de Lure. The final climb became a tough challenge for Astana Qazaqstan Team leader Samuele Battistella, who gave his best to finish as high as possible.

The team did an excellent job during the day to protect and to support Samuele before the climb, while on the slopes of Montagne de Lure Battistella once again showed his increasing form. The Astana rider stayed with all other favorites until the moment when Nairo Quintana, the future winner of the stage and the final classification, launched his attack. Fighting until the very last meter of the stage, Battistella finished 12th, 1 minute and 27 seconds behind the winner. With this result Samuele Battistella took a very solid 7th place in the final General Classification of the Tour de la Provence.

“I am really happy with my performance in my first race of the season. I was able to build a good form to this first race and a Top-10 really motivates me ahead of the next starts. I am looking forward to keep on improving and to aim for more in the upcoming races”, – said Samuele Battistella.

Tour de la Provence. Samuele Battistella takes the lead in the best young rider classification – Astana

Tour de la Provence. Samuele Battistella takes the lead in the best young rider classification

The first normal stage of the Tour de la Provence (Istres – Les-Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer, 151.8 km) has been impacted a lot by the cross wind, which provoked echelons in the middle part of the distance. Finally, a group of some 20 riders broke away from the peloton to make the decisive move and, thus, to play the stage win.

Astana’s Samuele Battistella, yesterday fourth in the prologue, once again showed his good form at the beginning of the season, taking a nice fifth place at the stage and moving into the lead in the best young rider classification.

“Actually we knew that the weather forecast was predicting a strong cross wind during the stage, so we were quite ready to this situation and to the echelons. My teammates helped me really well, in the right moment they moved me up in front to a good position, so I was able to join the leading group and to stay there until the end. Unfortunately, Leonardo Basso in a moment was almost involved in a crash and thus he could not join me in front. At the end of the day I was able to sprint for a good fifth place and I am quite satisfied with this result. Also, I am happy with the best young rider jersey, it is a good start of the season for me”, – said Samuele Battistella.

“Indeed, our team worked very well today as we expected that the wind will be a key factor today. Artyom Zakharov and Gleb Brussenskiy did a great work on the first part of the distance, supporting Samuele Battistella and Michele Gazzoli. Later there was a dangerous situation and Leonardo Basso was almost crashed but, fortunately, escaped to crash. However, there was a split in the group right on that moment and he and Michele Gazzoli found themselves in the second group. It’s a pity because Michele could do a good sprint in the final, anyway we still had Samuele Battistella there and he spent another strong day on the bike”, – added Dmitriy Fofonov, team Sports Director.

Astana – Premier Tech finishes 2021 season with a stunning win by Samuele Battistella – Astana

Astana – Premier Tech finishes 2021 season with a stunning win by Samuele Battistella

It was the perfect way to wrap up a challenging 2021 season as Samuele Battistella soloed to glory in Bassano del Grappa after a stunning performance riding many kilometres at the front of the race.

The last race of the 2021 season took the riders over 200km from Venice to Bassano del Grappa with the second part of the race featuring a punchy circuit before crossing the finish line.

The Astana – Premier Tech riders showed an amazing display of teamwork, controlling the race from kilometre zero. As the race headed towards the last laps of the circuit, Samuele Battistella paid attention to the moves at the front which saw him lead the race with two other riders. Meanwhile Alexey Lutsenko took control of the pace in the chasing group.

At the front, Matteo Trentin touched wheels with Battistella and hit the deck, which meant Samuele Battistella led the race solo with less than 20 kilometres to go. The chasing group pushed hard trying to close the gap but Battistella put the hammer down and rode an absolute fantastic race to wrap up the season with a win, and was able to celebrate as he had a five-second gap over his opponents.

Teammate Alexey Lutsenko rounded out a great end of the season with sprinting to a top five finish.

I feel sorry for Trentin, we worked well together and when he touched my wheels we had only 15 kilometres left. I asked Martino (Giuseppe Martinelli) what we should do then and he said I should ride my rhythm up the climb towards the finish. From there on I never looked back and gave everything I had. It is my first victory as a professional and it feels like a rebirth as the season started not in the way I wanted as I struggled with health issues. The last days I worked for Alexey and today he worked for me as a return. The last kilometres were on home soil, I train here a lot and the fans were amazing and pushed me. Also, a huge thanks to my team, it was pure teamwork. The plan was that I start and Alexey would finish it off but at the end we changed and I went ahead with Luts also taking a top result. It is the perfect way to finish our season. – Samuele Battistella

What should I say, it has been a wonderful week. Already on Friday, when Lutsenko took the win, it was pure joy but today’s win was just perfect. Today, I bet on Battistella to win, even if we weren’t riding for him and he needed to work but you could see the previous days that he was getting stronger and stronger. I am so happy for the team and it was the best way to finish the season and also to take these emotions into the off season, already being motivated for the upcoming one. I hope this victory will be a good sign for 2022. – Giuseppe Martinelli
