Bahrain Victorious will take part in the first edition of the “Settimana Ciclistica Italiana – Sulle strade della Sardegna”, scheduled from 14th to 18th July entirely on the roads of the Italian island and Region Sardinia.
The total 860km course consists of 5 stages, from the north to the south of the island, featuring mainly an inland hilly and mid-mountain terrain. Departing from Alghero and finishing in Cagliari, the peloton will reach other main towns like Sassari and Oristano. A final mountain day could be decisive for the General Classification, although the opening stage could also be already a key day for the overall.
Bahrain Victorious SD, Alberto Volpi: “We will keep our attention high from the beginning, as our goal is to grab a place on the GC podium with Mark Padun, and stage 1 from Alghero to Sassari can be tricky when it comes to a short stage race. Any summit finish is on the menu, but the whole course will be challenging because we are on an island, and the wind can affect the race alongside the high temperatures. Therefore, stage 2 – is likely to end in a bunch sprint – and stage 3 – the easiest on paper – could be unpredictable for the GC fight. The race will end with a demanding weekend as stage 4 features a road constantly climbing since the start and stage 5 in particular, with a tough climb of 7 km (max. 12%) to be repeated two times in 46 km.
We will aim to be competitive in the general classification, but we are also looking for a stage win. The Settimana Ciclistica Italiana will be the last test before the Olympics Games. It will be a great opportunity to tune the preparation for several riders competing here, including our Damiano Caruso, Gino Mäder and Jonathan Milan. Both Damiano and Gino will be supported to go hunting stages. To help, especially in the mountains, we will have good climbers as Santiago Buitrago and Stevie Williams, with Domen Novak protecting our leader. All in all, we have an interesting squad to lit up this new stage race on the calendar”.
